A brilliant French noir that's simply brimming with tension and spectacle. It has everything you could ask for: fascinating characters, gorgeous cinematography, stylish costumes, atmospheric set design, tight editing, and a plot that seems to unfold so naturally and yet with so many twists and turns along the way. In my opinion, this is much better than Le Corbeau and Clouzot's earliest masterpiece.
