Such a simple little story, yet so enlightening and real. The close perspective of these insignificant privates made a stark contrast to the high-riding generals and other commanders. It was wonderfully personal, and I loved the close portrayal.
But the fact that Bill Mauldin, the WWII cartoonist, and Audie Murphy, the most decorated WWII hero, played the principle characters never left me. These were real soldiers, not mere actors. Yet they were so young, such boys. That added a very real realism to the film, making it one of my favorites.
