chemosh - At the beginning of the film they're just planning to go to what they refer to as the "Thing" - presumably, a popular tourist spot. Since it was a popular spot, and probably not a long hike, they (stupidly) decided not to bring supplies. But then they see other groups walking in that direction, so they (stupidly) decide to leave the trail and go off on their own. Both of those are stupid mistakes, of course, but as someone who lives not very far from where parts of this were filmed, I can assure you based on media reports that stuff like this (taking few if any supplies on a hike, leaving the marked trail without any map or compass, etc.) happens fairly frequently, especially with young people.
Also, as someone who enjoys taking long drives (in the same kind of setting as this film), sometimes with a friend in the car - I can assure you that there are occasional extended periods of silence. It's actually very relaxing, and gives one a chance to sort of "meditate" in beautiful surroundings. It might not be "normal" (whatever that means), but it does happen.
Of course, all that is kind of beside the point, as this is rather clearly a work not grounded in realism - as evidenced by their rather inventive use of language and the ending (among many other aspects of the filmmaking.)
