A tense prison movie which was skillfully made and grounded in a solid performance by Clint Eastwood. The actual use of Alcatraz as the setting for the movie was a brilliant decision which provides splendid visuals and a firm sense of realism. The narrative is entertaining and well directed, but its impact has lessened due to the striking similarities with the later (and even better) movie The Shawshank Redemption. The movie is mostly told through its visuals and has an economic approach to dialogue, a stylistic choice which is far too often neglected today.

Wonderful thriller. I can't understand why it isn't on any lists.

A thrilling prison-break movie, inspired by a true event. The action gradually heats up and the final breakout sequence is a great experience, aided by the apt mood-setting BGM score and the lighting.
The way the breakout is carefully planned and executed patiently by the trio, makes for good viewing.
Clint Eastwood takes care of the starpower while the other actors enacting the prison inmates, provide their little unique touches and moments to the overall movie.
