It's not that they liked to make Chinese movies with Americans pretending they were Chinese, that's just how it was back then. It's yellowface, similar to blackface.

This was actually quite good-- an obvious inspiration to Terrence Malick. Impressive outdoor scenery and very expressive camera work and editing. Clearly it's regrettable they didn't cast more Asian actors but it's still emotionally resonant.
