Tense, well done, Hitchcockian thriller, until you realize two things...
1. Hepburn's character has no reason not to just give the doll up.
2. The bad guys go through a overly convoluted scheme to get the doll, when they really just could've broken in, held her captive and ransacked the place. She obviously couldn't identify them to the police afterwards.
Also, I'm surprised at the comments here praising Hepburn's acting. I thought she was terribly overwrought. GASOLINE!!
Still, despite my negative post, I actually really enjoyed the film.

Majority of the film is a mystery/thriller, the final 20 minutes have some great moments of horror. Very good.

@Cameron, the first point I agree.Although it may be she was not sure they won't just kill her after getting the doll. Maybe she was trying to buy some time.
For the second, they(in fact just Roat) HAD searched the apartment and didn't find the doll. Hence the elaborate scheme to get the information from the lady of the apartment.
