Total Film magazine had this as their number 4 movie of 1985 ahead of movies such as Withness, Pale Rider, The Breakfast Club and Re-Amimator. The acting is superb, but there is nothing special about the plot and there are no surprises. The worst thing is the lack of logic in the actions performed by the characters. For instance when Omar and Johnny decides to have sex in a central room in the middle of the shops new opening, with a huge crowd outside waiting to get in and with several visitors expected (and the door is bloody open!). Another example is when Omar decides to steal from a drug-smuggler right under his nose. In any other movie he would have been beaten to a pulp or at least confronted in some way, especially after he uses all the money to shine up the shop. I could have bought it if he were stupid, but evidently he is some kind of business whiz if you look at how well the operation is running. And the way he threats his lover and friend, obviously abuses him to do his dirty work and even tells it to his face.... That didn't seem believble to me.

Oh my. Young, horny, angsty and gay Daniel Day Lewis - enough said. This movie is just a complete, sweet mess.
