Amazing, how economically Hollywood could tell a story back then. If this movie were made nowadays most directors would take an extra 40 minutes to get the same point across. Robert Donat's performance is so strong that you get a full sense of his character almost immediately and yet never tire of him. The balancing of tones is masterful as well.
