Well this was something! How some people don't appreciate this movie is beyond me. It has so much to offer: an interesting main plot, the character development, the bizzare/erotic Euro arthouse scenes, the subtle clues of what will happen next... and it all serves beautifully to fully present the historical background of nazi Germany. The nazi regime is of course ridiculed, but it has rarely been presented to be as absurd and appealing as here. The main analogy of small minded German people following the nazi crowd works brilliantly and at the core of all this is the acting of then 11 year old David Bennent and of the rest of the cast too - it just suits the movie perfectly. One of the best German movies of all time, for sure and one of my all time favourites. Can't wait to watch it again!

I loved this film, except for his screaming. I feel that Oskar's growth is a symbol for Germany during that time. He stops growing during the beginning of the Nazi movement and decides to start growing again at the end of the war. Plus, you have to admit that the little guy has some skills at getting women.

This is a good one. A strong film from such important names as Volker Schlöndorff and Günter Grass. I had watched it a while ago but still remember how stunning it was.
