The scene near the end when Birju (Sunill Dutt) is hacking away at the door with an axe like a madman so he can get the gun back his mother took from him, I would have fell out if he said:

"Here's...BIRJU!'

I hated this. First of all, Birju was already unbearable when he's a kid; as an adult he is even worse. After a perfectly lovely opening thirty minutes, the tragedies start to pile up in almost comical manner, but make no mistake-- this movie takes itself as seriously as the Bible. We're supposed to feel for Mother, but it is hard when her whole identity is being a victim. The movie is much more interested in Birju, but his character is squandered with too many jokes and pranks and half-brewed romantic plots that never really pay off. Also: almost every scene is people being hysterical-- either insulting each other, hitting each other, pulling and struggling, calling each other's name out loud. Birju! Mother! No!! It just becomes too much after a while. It's three hours long, after all. Anyway, I'm sure this was a landmark and a very important piece of filmmaking and that I'm missing a lot of the cultural context. Also the musical lyrics were missing from my subtitles. But I pretty much hated this. Sorry. Some interesting editing and framing tho.
