The Criterion DVD has a documentary, "Jusqu'au 23 juillet", which relates the film to Drieu La Rochelle's novel and relates the 20s context of the novel to the 60s context of the film.
I was led to watch this after seeing Joachim Trier's Oslo 31 August, which transplants the novel to 21st-century Norway.
