Wow, what a film! Set mostly in the claustrophobic sewers beneath a bombed-out Warsaw near the end of World War II, Andrzej Wajda's second feature may seem to start a bit slow, but before long you'll find it impossible to tear your eyes away from. This is the gripping, true story of the Warsaw Uprising—Polish resistance fighters who attempt to evade the Nazis by escaping through the city's labyrinth of sewers. And even though the film reveals from the start that none of the characters will ultimately survive this ordeal, that doesn't detract for an instant from our complete involvement and immersion in their struggle for freedom.
The evocative performances, strong character development, and compelling script are all highlights here that ending in particular!, but the true star of the film is its stunning black-and-white cinematography. A powerful, must-see film for any lover of history or cinema.
