Newman's acting chops are as phenomenal as his pool playing. He plays a truly despicable pool hustler that drips with arrogance and narcissism. The romance running through the film between the pool playing can drag on but I think really adds to the hopelessness that the couple feel deep down. They both know on some detached level that it won't work out but like Newman's character in the movie, they don't know when or how to quit.

The first scene is absolutely mesmerizing. Paul Newman the boss!
