While this often features the evocative colour and framing of Argento's best (think Suspiria), its' key focus as a piece of surrealism isn't one of a nightmare. Instead you get to see the more banal horror of a desperately sad, everyday world, with the bizarre blending in around the edges in ways which make you question your own interpretations. Reaching an orgiastic peak of kinds with moments of religious symbolism, guignol, and unusually haunting analogy, the likely reaction is a mix of depression and disturbed splendour. The jarring tonal shifts in score only add to how unsettled I felt. As an auteur trump card and a stylistic melting pot, this makes a singular impression.

Amazing surrealistic yet sensible film! It takes a timeless struggle and portrays it in a physical manner that is not only viscerally stunning but tells the story of redemption from the mental and emotional bondage of a domineering and controlling mother. Jodorowsky's classic style of looking at the thema through the lens of the psychedelic experience makes this an unforgetable and artistic film that is unparalleled in it's genre by any other than maybe some of his own work. In a nutshell, a must see if you're into the avant- garde and surreal.
