Is that an "M" reference in Black Angel, giving Peter Lorre is in it (as a slicker operator than usual, I like it), or just a coincidence? Be that as it may, this little Film Noir never really goes far enough for me. There's a sexier version of this film, and an edgier, more shocking version of this film, but 1946 Hollywood wasn't going to give it to us. It's still quite watchable, mind. After a singer is killed, the wrong man is accused, tried and convicted, and only his wife (June Vincent) believes in his innocence. Parterning with the victim's husband (Dan Duryea) to find the real killer causes complications and musical numbers, and leads us to a not entirely unpredictable twist, though I admit it's now how I thought it would all resolve itself. I like the look of the flashback sequence (shooting the action through a flexible mirror, am I right?), but overall, a middling effort.
