While offering a unique perspective on Vichy France, presented with some technically impressive editing, this doc comes off mostly unfocused. An ironic impression since all the writing comes from one German writer. I found myself comparing this film to a similar documentary, The Sorrow and the Pity, which while focusing on dozens of individuals, drives home an engaging narrative thread. One Man's War serves its purpose well as a document, but it doesn't exceed its station by being more than the sum of its parts.
