I really wish I liked this as much as I liked the first one.
I will put my hands up and admit that I have never seen the show, but for the past year I have been hearing people who love the show say that part two is going to struggle to live up to the first part and it seems they are right.
It’s not a bad movie by any means, in fact it has some really brilliant moments and in places even feels more cinematic than part one. But the unfortunate knock on effects of splitting it in two movies are more evident the second time around.
Act one (and therefore part one) has much better musical numbers and much stronger world building and character building. Wicked felt like something really special and Wicked: For Good just feels like a retelling of the Wizard of Oz with different songs.
As before, the performances really do a lot of heavy lifting- god only knows what these movies could have been if they had been miscast, I still think Cynthia and Ariana are perfect.
Also, the cinema experienced a power cut right in the middle of “For Good” and we had to wait half an hour for them to get it running again so that probably didn’t help the experience.

I never saw the musical on stage so for me the first one seemed like an interesting reinterpretation of a familiar story with light political touches, set to memorable songs. But this revealed it as nothing more than a pandering mess of a fan fiction. The connections to The Wizard of Oz felt rushed and forced; and the cop out ending ruined the point of the story which was already questionable.
