Didn't feel like a Dutch movie at all, and not only because it's miles ahead of the nation's usual output in cinema. The class-based story feels like an English Dickens' story, the time period oozes German expressionism and the cinematography feels more "catholic" than the usual Dutch calvinist approach (as one critic remarked). Victor Löw steals every scene he's in. Deserved Academy award winner and now being screened in beautiful restoration by EYE.
