It's difficult to compare this one with the 1940 version with Errol Flynn. Both are almost identical in dialog but Neil Hamilton and Richard Barthlemess both bring something extra to the movie. Flynn was more jovial and it only seemed right for him to get his comeuppance to make the decisions his superior fought his conscience with. But Barthlemess has a seriousness - almost anger - to him that makes it right for him to have to deal with the decisions. If I had to choose I think I'd take this version over the later one.
