This movie was made to criticize the glorification of the gangster lifestyle. By the time the remake of this movie was made nothing was left but the glorification of hyper violence, drugs, and objectifying women. Notice how in this movie by the time he dies, he has lost everything. In the remake he gets to go out in a blaze of glory with some really great lines. I won't deny being guilty of a thirst for blood and depravity. But I appreciate that this movie was trying to say something.

I felt like I needed subtitles to understand some of the 'gangster' accents. But it's easily my favorite pre-code film with an outstanding performance by Muni.

The 1932 Scarface has the edge for me, even though they are both fantastic. I love the "X" motif used through the film.
